A new chamber opera by Magnus Bunnskog and Anne Pajunen
What is going on with our Moon? The one that seduced Pierrot, the one we have projected our dreams, yearnings and passions onto. What has gone down since the magic was lost that fatal day back in 1969? A slippage for mankind?
Evocative, dark, dramatic and at times very comical. Vocal virtuosity, sprechgesang, recitativi, spoken word – it’s all in there, in the soloist’s part portraying the desperate, longing, grieving, searching human. The human, who speaks for all humans who worshipped and adorned the moon, and now has to watch its slow destruction. She is desperate to find a new candidate, a new target for adoration. The iconic chamber piece Pierrot lunaire from 1912 by Arnold Schönberg inspired the creation of an updated situation regarding the relationship between humans and the moon. We don’t dwell in the past. However, there are certain facts that now inevitably belong to the past, such as the moon being the symbol for the unachievable. How did that happen? What will it do to us, in the long run?
To be premiered in spring 2026.
